My Approach to Senior Photography

I love doing senior photos! And in this instance I'm not talking about the seniors that have been blessed with so many years of living here on Earth, I'm talking about Seniors in High School. Teenagers. This can be an awkward age, full of fear and anxiety about the unknown future, but it is also a beautiful time where we get a glimpse of the adult person that our child is becoming. You can still see bits of the child that they once were, but now there is so much more. Their passions are more defined and their dreams are developing into realities. They are most likely planning their post high school lives which could include college and/or career opportunities. It’s a huge milestone, and they got there!

I want to get to know you

Each of us is unique, and I try to capture our individuality in all of my senior sessions. You can see this in the outfits that are chosen, either dressy or relaxed, and even in the location that is chosen, whether it is nature, urban, at the school or anywhere else in-between.

When I do a senior portrait session with my high school seniors, I want the session to be all about you. I’ll give you an opportunity to tell me about you, including personality traits that best describe you, music that you like, things you like to do in your free time and clothes that you like to wear. We will select the perfect location for you based on your vibe - whether it is urban or nature or somewhere in-between.

What should you bring to your session?

I’m not a huge prop person and I normally do not have props that I bring to any of my sessions, but if a senior has something special to showcase their personality and achievements, I say go for it! I’ve done photos of track and field athletes at the track in their uniform - and if we are at the track and you are in uniform I will most certainly make you run! I’ve done the same at the soccer pitch. I’ve seen some beautiful dance outfits, and photographed some great stunts from a Color Guard. One favorite accessory is always the cap and gown. I’ll make sure to get you wearing it, draping it over your shoulder, throwing the cap in the air, etc. All the fun stuff!

What should you wear?

This is probably the most commonly asked question. It’s such a personal choice and you don’t have to pick just one. Most seniors like to have up to three outfits in addition to their cap and gown. Some choices I’ve seen are a suit and tie, nice dress and heels, casual top and jeans, and college and/or high school spirit wear. I’ve also had students bring their athletic uniforms, and their dance or cheer attire.

The photo session is all about you, and celebrating this huge milestone in your life. It’s about recognizing your accomplishments and achievements as you take the next step in your life.
