Best Locations for Family Photos in Charlotte & Union County, NC

Family walking together for photo session in Marvin Efird Park

Many families imagine perfectly posed photos, but some of the most meaningful images happen when everyone is simply walking together and enjoying the moment.

I photograph many family sessions throughout Charlotte and Union County, and each location brings its own unique look and feel to a session. Planning family photos involves more than just choosing outfits.

One of the most common questions I hear after booking is,
“Where should we take them?” And it’s a good question.

Location plays a big role in how your photos feel — soft and natural, bright and airy, textured and urban, or calm and classic.

The good news is that Charlotte has beautiful options in every direction. The key isn’t choosing the “most popular” spot. It’s choosing the location that fits your family best.

Here’s how I help families decide.

Green Spaces That Work Beautifully for Family Photos

Charlotte has several parks and greenways that photograph beautifully, especially in spring and fall. Open shade, tall grasses, tree-lined paths, and filtered light create a soft, natural backdrop that keeps the focus on your family.

Locations like Freedom Park and McAlpine Creek Park offer a lot of variety — open fields, water features, and wooded areas — all within a short walk.

If you're in Union County, there are beautiful options closer to home as well. Parks like Colonel Francis Beatty Park and Cane Creek Park have lovely natural backdrops with quiet trails, open grass, and soft evening light.

These spaces work especially well for families with younger kids because there’s room to move. Kids don’t feel confined, and that relaxed energy shows in the photos.

Parks and natural spaces are wonderful for family photos because they give kids room to move and explore while still creating a beautiful backdrop.

Urban Locations for Family Photos in Charlotte

If you prefer something a little more structured, Charlotte’s urban areas provide beautiful neutral backdrops — brick walls, soft concrete tones, and simple architecture.

Areas around Uptown Charlotte or South End offer texture without distraction, which keeps the focus on expression and connection.

For families in Union County, downtown areas like Downtown Waxhaw and Downtown Monroe are wonderful alternatives. They offer charming brick streets, historic buildings, and quieter spaces that photograph beautifully.

Open Fields & Golden Hour

If you love warm evening light, open fields just outside the busier parts of Charlotte can be especially beautiful.

Golden hour — the hour before sunset — creates that soft, glowy look many families love. It’s less about the season and more about the time of day.

Union County has some wonderful spots for this kind of light, especially in areas around Cane Creek Park, Dogwood Park and the surrounding countryside where open space allows the evening light to shine through.

Soft evening light adds warmth and depth to photos, which is why many outdoor sessions are scheduled closer to sunset.

In-Home Sessions

Sometimes the best location is simply your own home.

In-home sessions feel relaxed and personal because families are already in a space that’s familiar. Kids don’t have to adjust to a new environment, and there’s no need to pack everyone up or rush out the door.

Even if your home doesn’t have large windows or perfect natural light, that’s okay. I can bring a small studio setup and create soft light that looks very similar to natural window light, so your photos still feel warm and natural.

This makes in-home sessions a great option year-round — especially during colder months or when you want something more personal and meaningful.

What About Weather?

Charlotte weather can shift quickly, especially in the spring. One of the advantages of planning sessions carefully is that we can stay flexible if conditions change.

Many outdoor locations include both open and covered areas, and sometimes we simply adjust timing slightly to find the best light. My goal is always to keep sessions feeling calm and unhurried so families can focus on enjoying the experience.

The Most Important Factor: Light

While season matters, light often matters even more.

Soft evening light creates warmth and dimension that midday light can’t replicate. That’s why most outdoor sessions are scheduled closer to sunset when the light is softer and more flattering.

I help guide timing based on the season and location so your photos have that same soft, natural feel you see throughout my portfolio.

Choosing What’s Right for Your Family

The right location should feel like an extension of your family — comfortable, natural, and easy.

The best location isn’t the trendiest or most popular.

It’s the one that fits your family’s energy.

Do your kids love to run and explore?
Are you drawn to something simple and clean?
Do you want something cozy and personal?

Once we talk through those questions, the decision usually becomes much easier.

If you’re planning family photos in Charlotte or Union County, I’m always happy to suggest locations that fit your family’s style.

Because when the location fits, everything else falls into place.
